In 1960, the Chrysler Corporation first introduced the aluminum 904. Its design has mostly evolved from the earlier version of Chrysler PowerFlite, which is a two speed automatic with the cast-iron three-speed TorqueFlite. This design is quite heavy and yet highly durable. Originally, Dodge/Chrysler 904 featured as a rear hydraulic pump.

The pump was started using the output shaft and hence the TorqueFlites before 1960 had to be actually push-started, which is quite different from the modern versions that use torque converters. Although to some of 904 automatic transmissions appear just like a black magic, in reality, it operates on mechanical and basic hydraulic principles.

Since this version works on basic principles, it can be easily modified to operate at extreme horsepower levels in case you are successful in choosing the right components. The versions of 904 and 727 are almost similar in design however; the components cannot be interchanged except the body of the valve even though their calibration is different from each other.
